These two types of drives are the two classifications of electric wheelchairs. There differences between the two are found in maintenance and sound levels. The belt-driven style allows the wheelchair to operate quietly; however, they require more maintenance. The gear-driven style requires less maintenance, but is much louder during operation. Choosing the correct style of drive system would depend on the user's preference, as well as the preferences of the members of residence. Because these chairs allow for maneuvering and changing position, reliving pressure on certain body parts, they are best for patients who have caregivers.
